IIT Delhi Review 2026: Admission Cutoffs, Fees, Branch-wise Placements, and Campus Life

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi sits in the heart of South Delhi — 320 acres of green campus in Hauz Khas, minutes from one of India’s most vibrant urban centres. Among the seven original IITs, Delhi is distinctive: it is the only major IIT inside a metropolitan city, which shapes everything from its industry connections to its campus culture to the career opportunities available to students even before placement season begins.

This review gives you ground-level detail on IIT Delhi in 2026 — what rank you need, what you will pay, what placements look like branch by branch, and what four years at IIT Delhi actually feels like.

Rankings and National Standing

IIT Delhi consistently ranks second or third in India in NIRF Engineering rankings, trading positions with IIT Bombay and IIT Madras depending on the year. In global rankings, it appears in the QS World University Rankings top 200 overall and top 100 in Engineering and Technology — among the strongest global rankings of any Indian institution.

IIT Delhi’s specific strengths: Computer Science (consistently in the top 2 among IITs for software placement quality), Electrical Engineering, Textile Technology (a unique, underrated programme), Chemical Engineering, and Management Studies (the Department of Management Studies, or DMS, is among India’s most sought-after MBA programmes).

Branch Change at IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi allows branch change after the first year based on CGPA. Students need a CGPA above 8.5-9.0 (out of 10) to be eligible, and competition for popular branches (CS, EE) is intense. The branch change policy is merit-based — there is no guarantee even with a high CGPA if demand exceeds available seats.

An important IIT Delhi-specific option: the Minor Programme. Students can pursue a Minor in any department by completing 5 additional courses. CS Minor is extremely popular among Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering students and effectively qualifies them for software roles during placements. Unlike branch change, minors do not require a minimum CGPA threshold — any student can pursue one.

Fee Structure 2026

IIT Delhi B.Tech fees (per semester, approximate 2026 figures):

  • Tuition Fee: ₹1,00,000
  • Hostel Room: ₹15,000-25,000 (varies by room type — single, double, or dormitory)
  • Mess Charges: ₹18,000-22,000 per semester (depends on mess and food choices)
  • Other institute charges: ₹12,000-18,000
  • Total per semester: approximately ₹1,45,000-1,65,000
  • Total 4-year B.Tech: approximately ₹11-13 lakh all-inclusive

Fee concessions mirror all IITs: families with income below ₹1 lakh — no tuition fee. Below ₹5 lakh — ₹30,000 per year tuition. SC/ST students — no tuition fee. Additionally, merit-cum-means scholarships and Institute Free Studentship are available. Many students from middle-income backgrounds graduate with education loan requirements far below what people assume.

Placements 2025-26: Branch-wise Data

IIT Delhi placement data is among the most tracked in India because of its proximity to Delhi NCR’s corporate hub and its strong tech sector connections.

Computer Science Engineering

  • Average domestic CTC: ₹35-45 LPA (among the highest of any IIT CSE programme)
  • Median CTC: ₹28-32 LPA
  • Highest domestic offer: ₹1.5-2.5 crore per annum (proprietary trading firms, FAANG-equivalent)
  • International offers: Jane Street, Optiver, Tower Research, Google USA — ₹1.5-4 crore range
  • Placement percentage: ~98%
  • Top recurring recruiters: Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Tower Research Capital, Sprinklr, Media.net

Mathematics and Computing

  • Average CTC: ₹30-38 LPA
  • High proportion of finance and quant roles alongside tech — Goldman Sachs, D.E. Shaw, Graviton Research Capital are frequent recruiters
  • M&C is frequently cited as having the best placement-per-rank-spent ratio at IIT Delhi — the cutoff is lower than CS but placements approach CS levels

Electrical Engineering

  • Average CTC: ₹22-30 LPA
  • Highly diverse career outcomes: semiconductor companies (Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Analog Devices), software (many EE students join Google, Microsoft), finance (quant roles), and consulting
  • Significant percentage pursue M.S./PhD abroad — EE students at IIT Delhi have strong grad school placement records at US universities

Mechanical Engineering

  • Average CTC: ₹18-24 LPA
  • Unique to IIT Delhi: proximity to Delhi NCR means stronger consulting and automotive sector connections than most IITs
  • Top recruiters: McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Mahindra, Hero MotoCorp, Samsung Research, Amazon Operations

Chemical Engineering

  • Average CTC: ₹16-22 LPA
  • Strong in process and energy sectors: ONGC, IOC, Reliance, BASF, Dow Chemical
  • Notable finance pathway: Chemical Engineering has historically been a strong feeder for Goldman Sachs and McKinsey due to analytical rigor

Textile Technology

  • Average CTC: ₹14-18 LPA — stronger than its ranking position suggests
  • The most underrated programme at IIT Delhi: Textile Technology graduates regularly receive the same non-core offers (consulting, finance, IT) as other IIT Delhi departments because the IIT Delhi brand applies equally
  • If your rank is in the 3000-4500 range and you are debating between Textile Technology at IIT Delhi and a better branch at a lesser NIT, the IIT Delhi placement ecosystem — applicable to all branches — is often worth serious consideration

Delhi Location Advantage: What It Actually Means for Students

IIT Delhi’s urban location creates opportunities unavailable to IITs in smaller cities:

  • Internship access: Delhi NCR houses the Indian offices of Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Paytm, Zomato, and hundreds of startups. IIT Delhi students can do internships during semesters (not just summers) due to proximity — an advantage unavailable to students at IITs in smaller cities.
  • Industry speaker access: Corporate leaders, startup founders, and policy figures regularly visit IIT Delhi for guest lectures and workshops because of proximity. The exposure to live industry thinking throughout the year is different from what students at more isolated campuses experience.
  • Weekend culture: Delhi’s museums, cultural events, food scene, and connectivity (flights, trains) mean IIT Delhi students have broader cultural exposure than most engineering college students. This quality-of-life factor is underrated in the IIT selection process.
  • Startup ecosystem: Several IIT Delhi alumni startups are headquartered in Delhi NCR, making the entrepreneurship ecosystem especially connected. The Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE at IIT Bombay has a counterpart in IIT Delhi’s Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer — FITT) supports student startups actively.

Research at IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi has strong research groups in: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (Yardi School of AI, established with significant industry funding), Semiconductor and VLSI Design, Biomedical Engineering, Sustainable Energy Systems, and Textile and Fibre Engineering.

For students interested in research, IIT Delhi’s proximity to government research institutions (DRDO, CSIR labs, IIT Delhi-affiliated AIIMS collaboration for biomedical research) creates unique collaborative opportunities. Several departments have joint projects with government research agencies that provide students with real research experience from the second year onwards.

Campus Life: Urban IIT vs. Forest IIT

IIT Delhi’s campus character is distinctly urban. Unlike IIT Madras (forest campus with wildlife) or IIT Kharagpur (vast rural campus), IIT Delhi feels like a premium urban campus. The hostels (14 student hostels) are a 5-10 minute walk from most academic buildings. The campus has its own shopping complex, several eateries, a large sports complex, and direct Metro connectivity (Hauz Khas Metro station is a 10-minute walk).

The student cultural scene is vibrant: Rendezvous (annual cultural festival) and Tryst (technical festival) are among the largest college events in Delhi. The Delhi University, JNU, and Jawaharlal Nehru University student communities nearby mean IIT Delhi students have a broader social ecosystem than most engineering college students.

Should You Choose IIT Delhi?

IIT Delhi is the right choice if your JEE Advanced rank qualifies you for a branch you find genuinely interesting, you value being in an urban environment with maximum industry exposure, and your career goals benefit from the Delhi NCR corporate ecosystem (consulting, finance, tech, startups in NCR-headquartered companies).

Consider IIT Madras over Delhi if research is your primary goal and you prefer a more isolated, green campus environment. Consider IIT Bombay if you are specifically targeting the Mumbai financial sector or the Bombay startup ecosystem. For most engineering careers, IIT Delhi’s placements, alumni network, and location advantages make it exceptional regardless of branch.
