  • Listen for synonyms: Answers often use different words than questions
  • Dont leave blanks: No negative marking

  • Skim first: Spend 2-3 minutes understanding passage structure
  • Read questions: Know what to look for before detailed reading
  • Time management: 20 minutes per passage maximum
  • Keywords: Underline keywords in questions, find them in passage

IELTS Band Score Structure

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is scored on a 9-band scale. Your overall band is the average of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — each scored from 1 to 9.

  • Band 9: Expert user — perfect command of English
  • Band 8: Very good user — minor inaccuracies
  • Band 7: Good user — handles complex language well; suitable for most UK/Australian universities
  • Band 6.5: Competent user — minimum for many universities
  • Band 6: Required for some undergraduate programs

Section-wise Strategy for Band 7+

Listening (40 Questions, 30 mins + 10 mins transfer)

  • Read the questions before the audio plays — predict what you will hear
  • Follow the audio sequence — questions follow the recording order
  • Watch for spelling — incorrect spelling means a wrong answer even if the word is right
  • Note-completion and multiple-choice are the most common question types
  • British English accents dominate — practice with BBC audio

Reading (40 Questions, 60 mins)

  • Do NOT read the full passage first — read the questions, then skim for answers
  • True/False/Not Given: “Not Given” means the passage neither confirms nor denies
  • Matching Headings: Identify the main idea of each paragraph
  • Time management: Spend 20 minutes per passage; do not get stuck on one question

Writing (Task 1 + Task 2, 60 mins)

  • Task 2 (essay, 250 words) = twice the marks of Task 1 — prioritise it
  • Task 1 (Academic): Describe a graph/chart/diagram with an overview and key trends
  • Task 1 (General Training): Write a formal/semi-formal/informal letter
  • Task 2 structure: Introduction → Body 1 (main point + example) → Body 2 → Conclusion
  • Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures — avoid repetition

Speaking (11–14 mins, 3 parts)

  • Part 1: Simple questions about yourself (2 mins)
  • Part 2: Individual long turn — speak for 1–2 minutes on a given topic (use the 1 minute to make notes)
  • Part 3: Discussion on abstract/global themes related to Part 2 topic
  • Speak naturally — fluency matters more than perfect grammar
  • Do not memorise scripted answers — examiners penalise memorised responses

3-Month IELTS Study Plan (Band 7 Target)

  • Month 1: Understand the format, take a full diagnostic test, identify weak sections. Focus on vocabulary building (10 new words/day).
  • Month 2: Practise each section daily. Complete 2–3 Cambridge IELTS past papers per week. Record your speaking and review it.
  • Month 3: Full timed mock tests every 2–3 days. Review errors. Work with a speaking partner or teacher for the Speaking section.
